Vandalism is a deliberate damage of an object or structure, while graffiti is an illicit writing or drawing on a wall or on any other type of public surface. It's only in the 2000's that graffiti started to be considered as a credible form of art. Spray paint in aerosol cans is the number one medium for graffiti "artists" but it comes with some negative environmental effects.

According to the Service de Police de la Ville de Montréal, the SPVM "if not authorized by the owner of the structure or building, graffiti is punishable by law, just like vandalism or misdemeanors". Fortunately, each of our 19 Montreal boroughs can be contacted if and when residents wish to remove unwanted graffiti on their private property. The service is offered free of charge.
